Make an inventory
List the application, runtime, databases, scheduled jobs, uploads, credentials and integrations. Include domain records, email delivery and any external services that restrict access by IP. Confirm licences and operating-system compatibility.
Review your current resource use before choosing the destination. A migration is a good opportunity to measure the application rather than copy an old server size without questioning it.
Prepare the new environment
Order the appropriate plan and location, and wait for confirmed server access. Configure users, updates, network rules and required software. Keep production credentials restricted and use a controlled validation route.
Create and test a recovery copy
Use an application-consistent backup method. Restore a copy on the new environment and check that the application works. Avoid accidentally sending emails, processing payments or running duplicate jobs during the rehearsal.
Decide how to handle new writes
If data changes during the move, plan how those changes reach the destination. Depending on the application, this may require a final sync, a maintenance window or a controlled read-only period. Do not assume that an earlier backup contains changes made after it was created.
Switch traffic deliberately
Prepare the relevant DNS records and understand the effect of existing cache lifetimes. Validate TLS, application URLs and external callbacks. Change traffic according to the plan, then check from more than one network where practical.
Monitor application errors, background work and key business functions. A homepage loading successfully is only one part of a completed move.
Keep a clear way back
Decide in advance what would trigger a rollback, who can approve it and how you will handle data created after the switch. Keep the old service available until the new environment is validated and the agreed rollback window has ended.
Close out the old environment
After validation, update documentation, backup jobs and monitoring. Confirm the old service’s cancellation and data-deletion arrangements. Export anything you still need before access ends.
